Week 11: Reading Diary A

  • Draupadi changes her name to Panchali and accepts her role as being the mistress of the palace of illusions
  • What is the interpretation of Palace of Illusions? What does it mean?
  • The blind King Dhritarashtra (born blind at birth) becomes a friend of Draupadi.
  • I feel like in this chapter Draupadi starts to really find herself, and becomes really confident and doesn’t let her husband's control her identity
  • She is married to the Pandava brothers
  • I feel like Draupadi has a secret crush on Karna. She is married so it seems a little strange that she would entertain his antics. But it seems that she likes the attention that he is giving her, maybe because she doesn’t get that attention from her husbands.
  • Could Draupadi have a secret love affair with Karna.

Sari:

  • This ties into the dice game that I read about in the earlier part of the semester.
  • Draupadi's husband had lost the kingdom, all the money and himself plus more to gambling.
  • What I thought was interesting while reading this chapter, was that she looked for the help of her secret lover Karna. He didn’t want to help her unless she begged for his help. Draupadi was to prideful to do that so she had to endear the harsh reality of being sold by her husband. (pg. 192)
  • Draupadi was asked to be stripped of her clothing, only her clothing  continuously covered her as if not to reveal her naked body.
  • The sorceress said to Draupadi when in trouble think of someone who loves you, she thought of Krishna.
  • "Is the desire for vengeance stronger than the longing to be loved?"
  • This is the time when Draupadi realizes that she doesn’t need her husbands to define her. A woman's identity is that of their husbands property. She realized that she is much more than that. (pg. 195)

Rice:

  • Draupadi and her husbands are banished.
  • They were to be banished for 12 years.
