Introduction: Welcome to the life of Jordan!

Hello All,

My name is Jordan Pennon. I am a "5th year senior" as some people like to call it. However, I like to say that I am taking a victory lap and I'm trying to soak in all of the opportunities that college has to offer and also I wanted to complete all the classes for my minor. I like to call myself a "Texahoma", because my dad lives in Texas and my mom lives here in Oklahoma. My major is International Studies, and over the summer finished my last class for my minor in Spanish. I currently work as a tour guide in Admissions and Recruitment here on campus, so you might see me giving a tour to a large group of people throughout the semester. I get the opportunity to go and study abroad in Rio de Janeiro next semester, which I am extremely excited about going overseas. Fun fact about my study abroad trip, I actually come back 2 days after I am suppose to walk across the stage, so that means that I get to walk early in December instead of May. I am a core volunteer, which is an organization through my college (College of International and Area Studies). We volunteer and help out with any events that they host. I'm on several umbrella organizations under Black Student Association, one of them being on the chair for Mr. and Mrs. Black University of Oklahoma. As far as working before I moved over to Admissions and Recruitment, I worked in Housing and Food here on campus and I was on the  room and board program.

I have a boyfriend and we have been together for 2 years. He used to run track for OU until he graduated and now he is in grad school for HR. Funny story about how we met. We met through me tutoring him in Spanish. He pretended to not understand Spanish, just so I could tutor him three times a week. He is my best friend and someone I know I can be myself around. His goofy matches my goofy.

Some of my hobbies include going to the movies, going bowling, reading, running, eating and sleeping. I am a movie fanatic, I have to go see every movie that comes out. I feel like movies complete me. I used to run two miles everyday, until I injured my foot, and now I am on restriction from running until I have surgery on my foot. I am a lover of food. Food and I are best friends, we compliment each other very well.

  1. Hi Jordan! That is really cool how your major is Spanish. That language is extremely useful when travelling. Have you done other study abroad trips? I participated on a medical brigade to Honduras where Spanish was the primary language. I also used to run a lot and I love movies! Good luck on your semester and have fun on your trip this year.

    1. Aakash,
I have not done any other study abroad trips, so this will be the first one. I am super excited for my trip and I's currently counting down the seconds, minutes, days and months.

  2. First I want to say that I love the drawing of you and your boyfriend. I have never had one of those and I have always thought they were so cool. I am a senior also. I will be graduating this December and I know that I am so ready. I was never able to do a study abroad program because I have two kids but I have always thought it would be so interesting if I could. Good luck on your senior year and your upcoming semester abroad. I hope you enjoy it!

  3. Hey Jordan, I hope that you have a good victory lap. I like the term “Texahoma”. We seem to have several International Studies majors. Study abroad sounds so exciting. I bet Rio de Janeiro will be an exciting place to visit. Good thing you just finished your minor in Spanish. You seem to be a part of several organizations. I am sure that keeps you busy.

  4. Hello Jordan! I am very glad to be one of your classmates.

I am also going to be a 5th year senior because I will add Management Information System as a minor. As a result, I have to take at least six more courses in the business college.

You must be very good at talking in public. I do not think I could do a touring work like you do. Hope you have a wonderful semester!

  5. After reading your introduction, it really seems like you are soaking up your experiences here! I bet all of those activities keep you really busy! I have a friend at OSU who has done several study abroad trips for her Spanish major and she loves them. It's a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and learn more about the culture. She just recently got back from Costa Rica and it was a great experience! I'm hoping to have an opportunity to study abroad at some point before I graduate, so I hope you have an amazing time!

  6. Oh, how cool that you are a tour guide, Jordan! Does that mean you work in the same office as Cameron Lohman? He was in Myth-Folklore last year, and I remember that he had a job doing campus tours... but I don't remember if it was for Admissions and Recruitment. And how great that you are going to Rio next semester: wow! That is a place I have never been to... but I sure would love to go. One of my favorite movies is Black Orpheus which was filmed in Rio back in the late 1950s. Such a great film:
    Black Orpheus
Wikipedia says much of the film was filmed in the favela of Morro da Babilônia which even has its own Wikipedia article too:
    Morro da Babilônia
Does it look amazing? I bet you will have a fantastic time there, with so many places to see and explore!

I worked with Cameron over the summer and now he works in the call center. He is such a funny character and there is never a dull moment around him.

  7. I love that you are taking a "victory lap". I will have to tell my roommate who is also on a victory lap. She will appreciate the term.

Your last paragraph is great! I have not met many people who like bowling, so I am happy to see you do. I used to bowl competitively with my family when I was eight years old. It was something I looked forward to every week!

  8. First off, I want to say that I love the photo of you and your boyfriend. Next, I totally didn’t know you were in my online class! That’s awesome! Third, that picture of the dog is pretty much a picture of me. And finally, I did not know you were going to Rio de Janeiro. That’s really cool. I bet you will love it. You have to send us pictures!

  9. Your post had me laughing in the middle of the union! As it stands now it also looks like I will be making a “victory lap,” so thank you for coming up with something to call it other than 5th year. I am sorry to hear about your foot I hope it gets better. I broke my ankle when I was 14 and that created some of the most frustrating times in my life as I learned to stay humble and let other people help me.

  10. So fun that you are a tour guide, I always thought that would be an interesting job. I would love meeting the little seniors anxious to come to OU. You must have a lot of love for your university, because the tour guides are always so passionate about the school and convince everyone that OU is the place for them! I am so jealous you are getting to study abroad in Rio. What an awesome experience! That is one thing I will always regret not doing during my time as an undergrad.

  11. Hello, Jordan! I actually laughed out loud at your "victory lap," because I understand that feeling all too well. Spanish sounds like a fun language, it's definitely on my list of languages to learn (my major is Russian Language). It seems like you are a very active and involved person! Your study abroad sounds lie it will be an incredible experience. I hope you enjoy it!

  12. Jordan, you have accomplished so much during your time at OU! I’m always impressed by people who have a major, a minor, are involved on campus, and have a job. That’s awesome! So jealous that you get to study abroad, I am sure it will be an experience you will never forget! I wish you the best of luck and look forward to reading more of your blog throughout the semester!

  13. Hi Jordan!
I am so envious that you are going to travel to Rio de Janeiro! I heard that city is absolutely breath-taking! I sometimes think about studying abroad or at least volunteering abroad if I don't get accepted into med school my first time. I'm really loving the caricature of you and your boyfriend. It's really sweet! I wish you two the greatest happiness and good luck in your studies!

  14. Jordan, I loved reading about your life! It was so sweet how you referred to your boyfriend as your best friend! I think that is exactly the way it should be! I am sorry that you can no longer run anymore since your foot is injured, that is really difficult stopping something that you love. Also, I think that it is super cool that you are a tour guide for OU! My roommate and I always said that was on our bucket list; to lead an OU tour group at least once before graduation! Continue living the dream!

  15. Hey Jordan! So I am so jealous that you get to spend your next semester in Rio de Janeiro! especially since it'll be right before the summer olympics! Oh I am so jealous! I wish I could stay in college long enough to finish my minor in anthropology, but I"m not willing to stick it out a sixth year! Nice to meet you Jordan!

  17. Hi Jordan! First off, congrats on finishing your Spanish Minor! I thought about taking my last class this summer, but I decided to wait until this semester to do it. I'm so excited for you to go to Rio de Janeiro! I loved studying abroad, and I'm always really excited to hear about other students who get to go to another country. Make sure you take lots of great pictures!

  18. Hey Jordan! I bet that's nice getting that Spanish minor out of the way. I inadvertently wound up with a History minor somehow. Your trip to Rio sounds like it's going to be a blast. I have never been to South America, but it is definitely on my list. I didn't realize you were so involved on campus, that's awesome. I am also walking in December, so I'll see you on the stage!

  19. Hey Jordan!
I really enjoyed reading your introduction. You seem like a really cool and genuine person. Your little story of how you met your boyfriend is so cute and funny. I cannot believe he fooled you into believing that he was not good in Spanish just so that you could see him three times a week. That is so cute! I love hearing stories about how people met their significant other.

  20. Hi Jordan! I loved hearing about how you and your boyfriend met. I love that he pretended not to be good in Spanish. And I agree with you, the fifth year is the victory lap at OU. Also I am a Spanish minor too so it is nice to meet a fellow Spanish minor. Good luck with everything!

  21. Hey Jordan! I too am on my victory lap this year, aka 5th year senior, but I do not graduate until May unfortunately. That’s awesome you are going to Rio de Jainero for a study abroad program! The Chemical engineering department offers the same opportunity for our final capstone project on an accelerated program during winter break but I won’t have the time to be able to do it. Good luck with beginning your career once you graduate and enjoy the rest of your semester!

  22. Hi Jordan! It is so exciting that you get to study abroad next semester! I studied in Italy last semester, and it was one of my favorite experiences in college. Now I can’t help but look at plane, train, and bus tickets all the time. I’m glad that I got to meet you before the semester is out. I hope you’ve really enjoyed this class! Have fun next semester in Rio de Janeiro.

  23. Hello Jordan. I like your term Texahoma. I may have to start using that because I lived in both Oklahoma and Texas. It’s great that you are so involved around campus. I wish that I had the time and availability to have been more involved ruing my time on campus. It’s good to have that extra connection with the University. Good luck with the rest of your studies!

  24. I am surprised I have yet to come across your blog. I enjoyed reading about how you met your boyfriend. I met my fiancee in chemistry class in highschool. I am also a big movie fanatic. I am always imprinted with a food or a desire after watching a really good movie. I watched Mad Max for the first time this weekend and went straight to playing Fall Out, haha.
